Raise your glasses

You could die of thirst
in the amount of time
it takes to get a drink

(Barman, please!
Barman!
Over here!)

But when that pint arrives
across the wooden bar and
pulls you from the brink ...

Raise your glasses....

Let’s drink to you,
and let’s drink to me
and drink to all,
for all they be
a toast to every silver maid
and to every fool
their thoughts un-played

Let’s drink to the future
Let’s drink to our history
and all of the wonders
of life in its mystery
And when finally done
and our glasses are gone
let’s raise a toast
to the staggering moon

Let’s drink to our families
Let drinking commence
Let’s raise up our glasses
as the recompense
For the lost and lonely
and the souls of the dead
for the millions of homeless
and for those without bread

Let’s drink for a lifetime
together in chains
to the liquor that binds us
and its happy disdain
Let’s drink to our country
and the drought of the Earth
to the damage we've done
and the trouble we're worth

Let’s drink to the average
to the one-out-of-five
to the kids with no water
and their fight to survive
Let’s raise up our glasses
so golden and full
Let’s drink till we’re stupid
and our thinking is dull

Let’s forget all their troubles
and just bury them all
under glasses of amber
so we don’t face the call
Let’s drown all their misery
in a lake of our choosing
at the end of a glass
you can win when you’re losing

(Barman, please!
Barman, over here!)

You could die of thirst
in the amount of time
it takes to get a drink...

All the wrong places

Bright lights
dark spaces
crowded dance floor
a chaos of faces
looking for love
looking for hope
looking for peace
in all the wrong places

Emptied wallet
emptied glasses
emptied heart
as the night time passes
looking for me
looking for you
looking for us
in all the wrong places

Play the clubs
play the aces
play the hearts
as your soul erases
looking for ways
looking for truth
looking for life
in all the wrong places

Neon dreams

neon dreams
not what it seems
inside a night shelter
lines of snow
dropping low
on the helter skelter
run about
down and out
life beyond the rainbow
know your name
feel the shame
dance on a volcano

neon lights
high as kites
giggling in the rain
doorman stare
you don’t care
laugh at his disdain
ten past three
bad company
run from the Old Bill
all alone
lost smartphone
crawling up that hill

moving on
once upon
another form to fill
hope is gone
can't go on
every pill and thrill
late at night
broken light
listening to the screams
mentally broke
ain’t no joke
shattered neon dreams

Try not to stare

At the end of the street where the three pathways meet who knows where your feet will travel? \ past the strip clubs and whores, drunken bullies and bores, just don’t stare as their stories unravel \ there’s perverts and nonces, and deviants and ponces who’d rival the vile Jimmy Savile \ there’s clip joints and boozers, and gamblers, and losers, and hustlers and waste-yer-time rabble \\

keep your eyes dead ahead, and your thoughts in your head as they paint the town red where you travel \ on bad concrete tracks, over potholes and cracks having sheer heart attacks in the gravel \ you could choke in the mud of this bad neighbourhood, you could drown in the blood of the battle \ no one would care, you’d be left lying there in a bright neon glare that will dazzle \ near the ill-repute clubs and the alcohol hubs and the noisy hubbub of the razzle \ there's no semblance of law, there’s no order at all, there’s no fall of a magistrate’s gavel \\

move along while you dare but please don’t stop and stare at the urban despair in the city \ make no contact with eyes, and disguise your surprise because most will despise any pity \ put aside your alarm and disarm with your charm or you’ll come to some harm in the city \ the district is seedy, but the people are needy, stay away from their greedy ferocity \\

Friday night

a one car crash at the charles cross junction
cone zone closure at the intersection
rain falls heavily on the black top
traffic lights cycle go, amber, stop
blue lights flashing, emergency
fire and rescue cutting someone free

onlookers hang from windows staring
instagram twitter snapchat sharing
police collect witness statements
rain continues with no abatement
lights reflect of the slick tarmac
shattered glass and a broken roof rack

teen drunk driver stands obdurate
his passenger not so fortunate
girlfriend rushed to the a and e
driver is a walking casualty
not so worried she was nearly killed
more concerned about the drink he spilled

fluorescent yellow jacketed men
measure the scene, then measure again
wreckage cleared within the hour
blood washed away by the downpour
clouds clear up and moon shines down
on another friday night in town
